Background and Browsing Suggestions

Policies for the periodic review of tenured faculty (or post-tenure review) are being considered by the UIUC Senate. What post-tenure review procedure would best address legitimate criticisms of current procedures, be in harmony with the fundamental concept of academic tenure at UIUC, and help to assure a University of Illinois of the highest quality?

The UIUC Senate’s ad hoc Tenure Issues Committee has been charged with making recommendations to Senate Council regarding Post-tenure Review. It needs the insights of the UIUC academic community to fulfill this charge and has invited comment through May 1, 1998. Based on your comments and its own continuing deliberations, the Tenure Issues Committee will prepare a draft recommendation for Council consideration and Senate action during the 1998-1999 academic year.

The UIUC Senate Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure, the Tenure Issues Committee, and Senate Council invite you to review the materials on this web-site. The suggested sequence for review is:

1. Summary of Post-tenure Review Options and Call for Comments

2. A Draft Post-tenure Process (prepared by a subcommittee of Senates Conference)

3. Licata and Morreale on Post-tenure Review: Policies, Practices, Precautions (A summary prepared at Michigan State University)

The remaining materials are excellent reference documents.

Your thoughtful consideration, analysis, commentary, and suggestions regarding the best policy for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign would be appreciated. During this comment phase, please send comments directly to the Chair of the Tenure Issues Committee: Donald L. Uchtmann.
