HE.08.16. Report on the Illinois Board of Higher Education Meeting, August 12, 2008.*
Items relative to UIUC:
Center for Human Resource Management at UIC and UIUC approved.
Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training approved.
Bachelor Science in Bioenergy approved.
The BHE, meeting at Kendall College, was welcomed by President Megahed.
New rules were recommended for program approval with particular focus on private institutions. These must be approved at the state level.
Despite the reservations of some members of the Board, participation in the American Diploma Project was approved. The focus of this multi-state project is “to raise high school standards, strengthen assessments and curriculum, and align expectations with the demands of college and careers.” While the focus is on high schools, it has implications for higher education.
Mike Baumgartner’s presentation on the fiscal year 2010 budget assumes no change in the direction of higher education funding.
The afternoon session focused on issues in the Public Agenda for college and Career Success.
