UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS
URBANA-CHAMPAIGN SENATE

Senate Committee on the Budget
(Final; Action)

RESOLUTION ON FACULTY SALARY AND BENEFITS

WHEREAS, there has been a widening gap in faculty salaries and benefits (total compensation) between public research universities and private research universities in the United States;

WHEREAS, this widening gap in faculty salaries and benefits (total compensation) has resulted from a variety of causes, including the globalization of the academic labor market, the disparities in abilities of public and private institutions to generate and expend educational resources, federal and state student aid policies, and other public policies which place public universities at a competitive disadvantage;

WHEREAS, this widening gap in faculty salaries and fringe benefits (total compensation) is in evidence at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and

WHEREAS, conscious public policies in the State of Illinois regarding budgeting for public higher education and higher education student assistance seem to contribute to this widening gap;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Urbana-Champaign Senate calls upon the State of Illinois to re-examine its public policies toward student assistance programs and the declining rates of increase in public university budgets within the context of eliminating this widening gap in faculty salaries and benefits (total compensation) between public and private universities; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Urbana-Champaign Senate and the leadership of the University of Illinois continue to take any and all efforts to restore the University of Illinois to a competitive position in faculty salary and benefits (total compensation) in the academic labor market.
