Urbana-Champaign Senate Meeting
December 3, 2007
A regular meeting of the Urbana-Champaign Senate was called to order at 3:15 p.m. at the Levis Faculty Center with Chancellor Richard Herman presiding.
Approval of Minutes
12/03/07-01 The meeting minutes of November 5 were approved.
Senate Executive Committee Report
Senator Nicholas Burbules (EDUC), Chair of the Senate Executive Committee (SEC), provided the following report.
At the door today, please pick up CC.08.05A, addendum to CC.08.05, Nominations for Membership on Standing Committees of the Senate.
Floor privileges have been requested to speak to EP.08.18, Creation of an Undergraduate Major in the Sciences and Letters Curriculum in African American Studies, LAS, for Jennifer Hamer and Sundiata Cha-Jua, Acting Director and Director, respectively, of the African-American Studies and Research Program. Floor privileges have also been requested for Paul Schmitt, President, Students for Chief Illiniwek, to speak to EQ.08.01, Resolution Concerning Homecoming Displays. I move that such privileges be granted (there was no objection).
The Educational Policy Committee, at the request of the sponsor, move to withdraw EP.08.21, Rename the College of Communications to the College of Media Arts and Sciences, from today’s agenda (there was no objection).
Tellers for today’s meeting are Senators Kim Graber (AHS), Abbas Aminmansour (FAA), and Rob Main (BUS).

Consent Agenda
A request was made to move EP.08.08 to Proposals for Action. The Presiding Officer then announced that the following proposals were approved by unanimous consent:
12/03/07-02 EP.08.05, Merger of the Division of English as an International Language and the Department of Linguistics into a newly configured Department of Linguistics,
12/03/07-03 EP.08.14*, Minor in American Indian Studies,
12/03/07-04 EP.08.17*, Creation of an Undergraduate Minor in Sub Saharan African Languages (SSAL),
12/03/07-05 EP.08.18*, Creation of an Undergraduate Major in the Sciences and Letters Curriculum in African American Studies, LAS.
Proposals for Action
12/03/07-06 Chancellor Herman presented for action EP.08.08*, Renaming of the Library Research Center. Senator Abbas Aminmansour (FAA), Chair of the Educational Policy Committee, stated that since the last Senate meeting, he has not heard back from an individual who had expressed concerns about this proposal. He moved its approval; a motion to postpone action was defeated by voice vote.
12/03/07-07 By voice vote, EP.08.08 was approved.
12/03/07-08 Presented for action was CC.08.05*, Nominations for Membership on Standing Committees of the Senate. Senator Kim Graber (AHS), Committee on Committees Chair, moved approval of the slates on CC.08.05 and its addendum, CC.08.05A. There were no floor nominations and nominations were declared closed.
12/03/07-09 By voice vote, the nomination slates were approved.
12/03/07-10 Next presented for action was EQ.08.01*, Resolution Concerning Homecoming Displays. Senator Constance Shapiro (ACES), member of the Senate Committee on Equal Opportunity and Inclusion, summarized the background of this measure and moved its approval. Arguments for and against this resolution were expressed by a plethora of senators.
12/03/07-11 By voice vote, action on EQ.08.01 was postponed until the next Senate meeting on February 25, 2008.
12/03/07-12 The Chancellor presented for action FB.08.01*, Resolution III Regarding AIG Sun America: Safeguarding the Interests of Employees and Retirees of State of Illinois/University of Illinois. Senator Barclay Jones (ENGR), Chair of the Committee on Faculty Benefits, moved its approval.
12/03/07-13 By voice vote, FB.08.01 was approved unanimously.
