URBANA-CHAMPAIGN SENATE

University Statutes and Senate Procedures

(Final; Action)

SP.03.03 Revision to the Bylaws, Part E, Section 2 - Faculty Advisory Committee

BACKGROUND

At its July 18, 2002, meeting, the Board of Trustees passed a revision to the Statutes allowing each campus to determine eligibility for membership on its Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC). Since the FAC often deals with issues of promotion and tenure, the UIUC FAC proposed membership be limited to tenured professors.

USSP believes Part E (Governing and Advisory Bodies) of the Senate Bylaws would be an appropriate place for campus policy on this matter. Since the Senate Clerk is statutorily obligated to conduct FAC elections, there are sufficient safeguards to ensure this policy will be adhered to.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The Senate Committee on University Statutes and Senate Procedures recommends approval of the following revisions to the Bylaws.

PROPOSED REVISIONS TO THE BYLAWS, PART E , SECTION 2

2. Faculty Advisory Committee

(a) Duties

The Faculty Advisory Committee shall provide for the orderly voicing of suggestions for the good of the University, afford added recourse for the consideration of grievances, and furnish a channel for direct and concerted communication between the academic staff and the administrative officers of the University, its colleges, schools, institutes, divisions, and other administrative units on matters of interest or concern to the academic staff or any member of it. The Faculty Advisory Committee operates under its own Articles of Procedure.

(b) Membership

The Committee shall consist of nine tenured faculty members.
