Important Notice:

• In cases when a proposal impacts resources of other units (e.g. dependence on courses offered by other departments, library resources, etc.), the Educational Policy Committee requires written confirmation from the impacted unit(s) that the necessary resources have been committed for this purpose. It is important that sponsors of such proposals obtain the required written agreement(s) in advance of submitting their proposal and include those documents in their packet to avoid delays in review of their proposals.
• Please review important information regarding proposals for re-organization (formation, termination, separation, transfer, merger, change in status, or renaming) of units.
• Approval of a proposal by the Senate does not indicate a commitment by the university to provide the necessary resources to offer the proposed courses, curricula, degrees, etc. indefinitely.

General Information:

Proposals that have gone through the appropriate channels and have been approved by the relevant committees and/or authorities at the unit and college levels will be sent to the Provost's Office. If necessary, the Provost's Office will forward a proposal to the Senate Committee on Educational Policy for consideration and recommendation to the UIUC Senate. Proposal Forms/Formats:

Proposals must be submitted in the established format. The Senate Committee on Educational Policy will accept proposals in the IBHE Proposal format (in PDF form or Word form) ONLY for those proposals that will need IBHE approval. Please visit the Levels of Governance for Program and Curricular Changes matrix for more information. Please note that proposals regarding graduate and undergraduate minors must follow special formats (see Information Related to Minors below).

Status of Proposals Received:

Please note that the Senate Committee on Educational Policy is only one of the bodies that may review a proposal. If approved by the Committee, a proposal is forwarded to the full Senate for a vote. Additional approvals by the Board of Trustees and the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) may be necessary for some proposals.

The Provost's Office will inform the sponsors in writing when a proposal has received all necessary approvals and may be implemented. Further, note that some curricular and degree changes may require a waiting period after final approval before they may be implemented. The "Status" reports listed below are not official.

** Proposals are received by the Senate Committee on Educational Policy after review at the unit and college levels as well as review by the Office of the Provost. Graduate proposals (except professional degree program proposals) are reviewed by the Graduate College also after review by the disciplinary college review.

Important Note: Proposals may be approved by the Committee provisionally, pending receipt of the revised version and/or additional documents or information by the Committee no later than two weeks before a Senate meeting. Proposals will not be forwarded to the Senate unless revised version and/or additional requested material is received and approved by the appropriate Subcommittee Chair. The Educational Policy Committee may pull a proposal from the Senate agenda, if necessary.
